  • 1 cup chopped dates
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp butter, softened
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ t sp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ cup chopped walnuts or pecans
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
